AD // Bunnahabhain
All thoughts and opinions are, of course, my own.
Did you know that Bunnahabhain has some fantastic drams available at SCOTCH at The Balmoral?
It’s the only venue where you can find the Bunnahabhain 35 Year Old which was created in honour of Bunnahabhain’s Distillery Manager Andrew Brown. Only 35 bottles were ever released so it’s very rare and special liquid history. At SCOTCH you will also find the 18 Year Old, 25 Year Old, 30 Year Old and 40 Year Old.
I’ve written about Bunnahabhain before, but let me tell you a little about them in case you’ve not come across them before. Bunnahabhain Distillery is located on the isle of Islay, off of Scotland’s west coast. Many whisky producers on Islay produce whisky which is heavily peated and full of smoky character, however Bunnahabhain primarily focuses on unpeated single malt that I usually describe as having notes of toffee, baking spices and tropical fruit. The whisky from Bunnahabhain is matured in a variety of sherry casks and the 18 Year Old is a personal favourite of mine!
The bar is a lovely escape from the busy east end of Princes Street. If you have a look in the window you might even see a copy of my book SCOTCH: The Balmoral guide to Scottish whisky which I wrote together with Cameron Ewen. In the book you can also read more about how to taste whisky and some of the Bunnahabhain whiskies that Ewen recommended.
Besides lovely drams, they also have the Brigh na Mara cocktail, made with Bunnahabhain 18 which is a delicious old fashioned style serve. Brigh na Mara means Essence of the Sea and was created by one of the whisky ambassadors that you will meet in the bar. The ambassadors are incredibly knowledgeable and friendly so if you have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask them.
