Sarah Rankin Supper Club at Traade Edinburgh

If you had asked me last week who my favourite chef is the I would’ve mentioned Sarah Rankin in my top 5, but after last nights Supper Club I’m ready to say that Sarah is at the very top of that list, closely followed by Calum Montgomery from Edinbane Lodge. Alongside fellow 2022 Masterchef participant Alexander Middleton Sarah hosted one of her popular Supper Clubs at Traade in Edinburgh’s Morningside. Sarah doesn’t just offer Supper Clubs but also private dining and do pop ups. Basically if you have a venue, she can come to you and cook. If you want to keep track of where she’ll pop up next, you can find the details on her website. I had the pleasure of meeting Sarah at a whisky event a couple of months ago, and then she was also cooking some delicious canapés and a gorgeous dinner when jag was on a press trip with Glenglassaugh. This was my first time attending one of her own events, but it will definitely not be the last. The vibe was very friendly and inviting when all the guests sat down along the shared table. As I mentioned when I was dining with Fallachan Dining last week, I really like the idea of having all guests along shared tables. Upon arrival we got a lovely welcome drink with gin, cucumber. mint and lemon which was a great refreshment to start with. For the Supper Club a welcome drink is included, but any other drinks are BYOB.

Let’s have a look at the menu for the evening. The 7 courses were amuse, earth, sea, land, pre dessert, dessert and to finish a petit four. Each course felt exciting and different to the other.

My highlights of the evening were the salmon tartare which was part of the amuse, the sea with a fresh scallop and broth full of flavour and the dessert with its rich ganache and blood orange sorbet. But I can’t fault any of the other dishes: the rye canapé had such a full flavour, the ox cheek was incredibly tender, the ajo blanco really interesting with it’s almond nuttiness and with the blackcurrant ice lolly I love that it had the leaves in it as well and they had so much flavour too. The dessert was served alongside a little glass of Triple Sec, which was just a little flavoursome bonus surprise!

There were also sourdough for the table which was delightfully soft with flavourful butter and alongside the ox cheek we could find micro leeks that were a burst of leek flavour in spite of their size.

I brought a Fierce Beer Rhubarb Pale Lager and the Nice canned pale rosé as I had them both at home and was curious to try them. Both were really nice and didn’t overpower the food either.
