Whisky & Witches at The Mother Superior

Whisky & Witches

A couple of months ago I ran in to Christine, a danish musician who also works in whisky tourism and she invited me to one of her Whisky & Witches events that she runs in collaboration with Jane from The Mother Superior. Together they arrange whisky tastings which also incorporate Christine’s folk style music as well as storytelling about witchcraft, folk tales and Scotland’s witchy history.

It’s certainly a different type of tasting and a very relaxed way to enjoy entertainment and drams. Jane does a good job of keeping a relaxed atmosphere in the room – introducing the whiskies but not making it too complicated so it suits a wide audience, but still happy to answer any questions and her and Christines co-hosting works very well resulting in lot of laughs but also some mysterious sections throughout the evening. Besides singing, Christine also plays the lyre and have recorded and composed the music we get to hear. With each dram there’s a tale and two songs fitting to the theme of each. In total the event was about 2.5 hours and kicking off at 20.30.

The line up is really good as well when it comes to the whiskies. Starting with Fragrant Drops Teaninich 14 Year Old Bordeaux Barrique Single Cask, continuing with NcNean, then High Grove 12 Year Old Laphroaig and Highland Park Cask Strength before finishing on a high with the lovely Stauning Rye.

My favourite of the evening was probably the Stauning, it’s a stunning whisky and has such lovely flavours. However the full line up was so varied and interesting and I rediscovered why so many people like the caramel-y Highland Park Cask Strength and it was so fun to try something from Fragrant Drops who just started up recently and is Edinburgh based.

LOCATION

The tasting takes place in the event space downstairs at Mother Superior and the candlelight and firelight make the room feel very atmospheric. You are also welcome to stay and enjoy the drams or order something from the bar if you wish to hang around a bit longer after the event.

Follow Whisky & Witches here on Instagram to keep track of their next event! Hopefully they’ll also make some appearances during The Fringe in August.
